Oshawa neighbourhood guide

Pinecrest

Pinecrest is the newer north-east quadrant of built-up Oshawa, a set of subdivisions laid out from the mid-1980s through the 2000s on former farmland between Harmony Road North and the Clarington boundary, south of the big-box stores along Taunton Road. It was planned as a family neighbourhood: curving streets and crescents, brick two-storeys with a double garage, schools built into the plan, and stormwater ponds and creek corridors turned into trails. Maxwell Heights Secondary School, opened in the 2000s on Coldstream Drive, serves as public high school for much of north-east Oshawa, and the Delpark Homes Centre on Harmony Road North just past Taunton adds pools, rinks and a library branch a few minutes away. Commuters reach Highway 407 by heading north on Harmony Road and Highway 401 by heading south, and Taunton Road carries a PULSE bus west to Whitby and Ajax. Residents are largely families in their first detached house or their second, plus a share of multigenerational households in the larger 2000s homes. It is quieter and newer than Eastdale to the south and more established than Kedron to the west.

Where Pinecrest sits

Pinecrest sits in Oshawa's north-east between Rossland Road East or Adelaide Avenue East on the south and Taunton Road East on the north, from Harmony Road North east to Grandview Street North and, on many maps, Townline Road North at the Clarington border. Coldstream Drive, Attersley Drive and Grandview Street North are the main internal streets, and the upper reaches of Harmony Creek and its tributaries thread through the west and south. The southern and eastern lines are drawn differently by different sources, so verify by street.

The homes you will find

Building moved roughly north and east. Streets down by Rossland Road and Harmony Road date from the mid-1980s and early 1990s: two-storey homes with three or four bedrooms and some bungalows, on frontages between 40 and 50 feet, brick front with siding at the sides, single or double garages. The late 1990s and 2000s phases toward Grandview Street North, Coldstream Drive and Taunton Road East are larger, with all-brick two-storeys, double garages, nine-foot ceilings on the main floor and lots that narrowed to 36 to 45 feet in the later phases, from builders reportedly including Delpark Homes, whose name is on the community centre up the road. Freehold townhouse blocks and a handful of semi-detached pairs sit at the subdivision entrances and along the collectors, and the Taunton Road frontage has attracted mid-rise and stacked townhouse proposals. Houses backing onto the Harmony Creek tributaries, the stormwater ponds or the hydro corridor have the biggest yards and the most rules. Basements are often finished, and walkouts appear on the creek side.

Getting around

Pinecrest is a driving neighbourhood with useful bus options. The 407 extension that arrived at Harmony Road in 2016 put a tolled interchange a few minutes up the road, giving a run west to the 404 and the 400 and east to Highway 418 and the 401 in Clarington. Highway 401 is reached down Harmony Road South in about ten minutes. DRT's 915 PULSE bus runs along Taunton Road to Whitby and Ajax GO, the 916 follows Rossland Road across the south edge, and local routes on Harmony Road North and Grandview Street North connect to both and to the north campuses. Oshawa GO is roughly fifteen to twenty minutes by car, and the proposed Lakeshore East extension would add a station at Thornton's Corners and one near Ritson Road that some Pinecrest commuters would use. Multi-use paths follow the creek corridors and the stormwater ponds inside the subdivisions, and sidewalks run on both sides of the collectors.

Schools

The public high school is Maxwell Heights Secondary, which opened on Coldstream Drive in the mid-2000s as a DDSB school for the growing north-east, and public elementary options reported near these streets include Jeanne Sauvé and Seneca Trail, with French immersion at designated schools. Catholic pupils under the Durham Catholic board attend elementary schools such as St. Kateri Tekakwitha or St. Thomas Aquinas depending on the street, and the assigned Catholic high school is set by DCDSB and may be Monsignor John Pereyma or Father Leo J. Austin across the Whitby line depending on the boundary. French first-language schooling runs through Viamonde and MonAvenir sites elsewhere in Oshawa. Every one of these assignments is decided by the board's current map, and new subdivisions get redrawn, so check the address. The Simcoe and Conlin campuses, college and university, are about ten minutes west along Taunton and up Simcoe.

Parks, shopping and daily life

Green space in Pinecrest follows water: the Harmony Creek headwater branches and the pond blocks carry paved trails and pocket parks, and the larger community parks have soccer fields, splash pads and diamonds. Harmony Valley Conservation Area with its off-leash park lies just south-west, and the Delpark Homes Centre north across Taunton offers pools, rinks, a walking track, a fitness centre and a branch of Oshawa Public Libraries. Shopping is the Taunton Road East strip: grocery, pharmacy, hardware, big-box retail and restaurants between Harmony and Grandview, with more along Harmony Road North, and Five Points Mall farther west on Taunton for the rest. Downtown Oshawa and the Oshawa Centre are fifteen minutes south-west. Lakeridge Health Oshawa's hospital is reached down Harmony or Ritson in about fifteen minutes, and Lakeridge Health's Bowmanville site is a similar distance east along Taunton.

Who it suits

Pinecrest works for families after a newer two-storey house with a double garage, schools within walking distance and a driveable link to the 407 for jobs in Markham, Vaughan or Toronto, and it suits multigenerational households who need bedrooms and a finished basement. It also works for buyers who want low-maintenance freehold townhouses at the subdivision edge. It is not for people who want mature trees, character housing or a walkable main street, nor for anyone who wants to be near the lake or the GO train. Streets fronting Taunton, Harmony and Grandview carry steady traffic, and the strip's lights are visible from the northern blocks.

Questions people ask about Pinecrest

Is Pinecrest a good base for commuting on Highway 407?

Yes, that is its main selling point for out-of-town commuters. The Harmony Road interchange is a few minutes north, and the toll road gives a predictable run to Markham, Vaughan and the 400 corridor at a cost that adds up over a year of daily use. Drivers headed to downtown Toronto still mostly take the 401 or GO.

Where would my kids go to school in Pinecrest?

Maxwell Heights, on Coldstream Drive, takes public students from most of the community, with elementary assignments split among nearby DDSB schools by street. Catholic assignments come from DCDSB and can send students west or into Whitby for high school. Boundaries in newer areas shift as schools open, so verify the specific address with both boards before you commit.

Are the ponds and creek corridors in Pinecrest a flood risk?

The stormwater ponds are engineered to hold runoff and the creek branches are protected by Central Lake Ontario Conservation setbacks, so flooding of houses is rare; the more common issues are wet rear yards on lots that grade toward the corridor and permits needed for fences, sheds and pools near the regulated line. Look at the grading plan and ask about any sump pump.

Are there still new homes being built in Pinecrest?

The subdivisions themselves are largely complete, with the last phases finished in the late 2000s and early 2010s, so new supply is mostly resale. Newer construction appears as townhouse and mid-rise projects along Taunton Road and up Harmony Road North, and active new-home building continues north across Taunton in the Taunton and Kedron communities.

How is the noise and traffic in Pinecrest?

Interior crescents are quiet by any standard. Taunton Road East is a busy regional arterial with the retail strip, Harmony Road North carries 407-bound traffic, and Grandview Street North is a growing commuter route, so houses backing or fronting those roads see the difference. There is no rail line here and Highway 407 is far enough north that it is rarely heard.
