South West detached homes for sale

Detached houses in South West fall into three eras. The wartime bungalows and taller one-and-a-half-storey plans from the 1940s on Kings Crescent, Exeter Road, Admiral Road and the streets around Harwood are the smallest but sit on the deepest lots, and the block now mixes originals, additions and full rebuilds. The Lakeside and Duffins Bay streets, laid out in the 1960s and 1970s south of Bayly Street West, hold bungalows and splits with a few two-storeys, on wide lots that have single garages and mature trees, and the best of them back onto the Duffins Creek ravine or sit a street from Lake Driveway West. A few larger 1980s and 1990s houses occupy the last pockets near the marsh. Buyers are families who want the lake, retirees who want a bungalow, and renovators. Check the wartime houses for original wiring, insulation and foundations; check the 1960s houses for roof, window and furnace ages and for basement moisture; and on any ravine or shoreline lot, pull the TRCA regulated-area mapping before you plan a pool, deck or addition.

Questions people ask about South West

Are the lakeshore streets in South West mostly bungalows?

The 1960s and early 1970s streets closest to Lake Driveway West and in Duffins Bay have a high share of bungalows and side-splits, which is why downsizers look here, while two-storeys appear on the later streets toward Bayly. Several bungalows have been topped up, so check permits on any second-storey addition.

Can I rebuild a wartime house on its lot?

Owners have, and the deep lots make it attractive, but the town's zoning sets height, setbacks and lot coverage for infill, and any new house must fit the by-law or go to the Committee of Adjustment. Get the survey, confirm the zoning and talk to the town's planning desk before you price the land as a teardown.

Do South West houses have basement apartments?

A number do, particularly the splits and bungalows with side entrances near the station, where commuters look for rentals. Ajax wants second units registered and compliant with the Building Code and fire rules, so ask to see the permits and the registration and confirm the parking, since the older streets have narrow driveways.
